Morneau, Bay recover from concussions

FORT MYERS, Fla. — From all indications, the Minnesota Twins have taken the right steps in managing star first baseman Justin Morneau's concussion, pulling him out of action right away, sticking to the advice of experts on the field and not pressuring him to return.

And yet, more than eight months after Morneau suffered the injury July 7, there's no certainty he'll be ready for opening day, let alone get back to his former MVP form.
For players, teams and fans, that unpredictability in the recovery time represents the most frustrating aspect of concussions, brain injuries that remain enigmatic despite significant medical advances.
No two concussions are alike, and they can range from the mild type that clears up in a few days, like the one Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett incurred when hit by an errant ball in practice Feb. 28, to the career-threatening ones.
  • MORE: Umpires also at risk

"You see a guy miss a week with a concussion, and you see a guy miss a year with a concussion," says Morneau, 29. "When I got hurt, I didn't think I was going to be out that long. I didn't think it was going to be that bad."
Though they're much more prevalent in football and hockey, where they have become the subject of considerable debate and consternation, concussions also have left a mark on baseball.
Eight major league players went on the disabled list with concussions last season — Morneau and New York Mets outfielder Jason Bay being the most prominent — and 30 in the last six years.
Catcher Mike Matheny, a four-time Gold Glove winner whose case first raised awareness about the injury in baseball, and nine-year major leaguer Corey Koskie had to retire when they couldn't sufficiently recover from their 2006 concussions.
Major League Baseball and players association officials are working on implementing a seven-day DL for concussions, which union head Michael Weiner said could be in place when the season starts March 31, as well as protocols for returning players to action.
Those are among several proactive measures the game has taken in addressing the issue. MLB also started requiring in 2009 that all players have cognitive baseline tests — the results are compared with how a player does in the test after a head injury — and it has expanded the education of athletic trainers on the symptoms and treatment of concussions.
"Baseball has been excellent in providing that culture and that support," says University of Pittsburgh Medical Center clinician Micky Collins, one of the nation's foremost authorities on sports-related concussions. "If a team gives an athlete the support it needs to get better from this, man, does it go better. It's such an important part of this."

Still feeling effects

Morneau is the first one to say the Twins have been unflinching in their support, even though the 2006 American League MVP missed the second half of last season and could not help the club as it got swept by the New York Yankees in the division series.
For a while Morneau thought he would be able to return for the stretch run, but he could not shake the fogginess that afflicted him since his head collided with the knee of Toronto Blue Jays second baseman John McDonald while trying to break up a double play.
While his condition improved gradually over the offseason, Morneau had occasional recurrences early in the spring and did not make his Grapefruit League debut until March 11.
He has no hits in 10 at-bats, typically meaningless numbers for a player of his stature. Still, there's no clear sign the defending AL Central-champion Twins can pencil him in for his usual 30 home runs and 100-plus RBI, or even count on him daily.
"We have the data from before as far as reaction times — the concussion test we do (known as ImPACT) — and the reaction time and everything else is back to normal," Morneau says. "Now it's going to take the reps to feel the data is right and you can be the same player."
ImPACT, which Collins helped develop, is a computerized cognitive test that assesses concussions.
Bay, 32, a three-time All-Star, has been symptom-free all spring and is batting .333 in 39 at-bats. His whiplash-induced concussion, suffered when he crashed into a Dodger Stadium fence July 23, seemed mild enough that he played in the next two games.
Shortly afterward, he reported a persistent headache that became his companion 24 hours a day for the next month and forced him out of the lineup for the rest of the season.
Bay found the treatment for his concussion — rest and relaxation — almost as difficult to handle as the injury.
As an athlete he was used to frequent activity, and the lack of it — combined with the symptoms from the concussion — made him miserable.
"When you're not doing anything else, thinking about your concussion occupies all your time," Bay says. "You can watch TV if you can tolerate it, and early on I couldn't. … Or (you can) read a book with the iPad or use the computer or nothing. … That was the toughest part: Do nothing, but do something to keep your mind off it. Well, what is that?"

Issue weighs on players

Players on the DL for extended stretches often feel isolated because they can't contribute. That sensation is even more pronounced for those with concussions, because few teammates have been through them.

USA TODAY
The Twins had not had a concussion since Morneau got beaned in 2005, forcing him to miss 13 games, and he describes the feeling as being alone on an island.
Minnesota center fielder Denard Span can relate, having endured an inner-ear infection in 2008 that made him dizzy, and the two shared their stories.
"With a head injury like that, you can't see any physical signs," Span says. "We don't see a scar; we don't see a cast or an incision. So it's tough mentally."
Morneau also found comfort and guidance in Koskie, his teammate in 2003 and '04. Koskie advised Morneau to be honest with doctors and not try to rush back. Koskie got hurt July 5, 2006, on a seemingly harmless play when he hit the ground awkwardly while chasing a pop fly. He tried to return less than 10 days later while not fully recovered.
"My symptoms went from a 2 or 3 to like a 9," Koskie says. "After I tried to push myself, the next day I woke up and my head felt like my brain was trying to crawl out of my skull. I was really dizzy, really nauseated. I couldn't focus. I couldn't go on the computer. I couldn't watch TV. I got numbness on one side of my body. It just wasn't good."
Morneau, Bay and Koskie grew up in Canada playing hockey, which exposed them to head blows and possible concussions as youths that might have gone untreated, though Bay dismisses that connection because he stopped playing hockey at 13.
Collins says concussed athletes are vulnerable to more harmful consequences if hit in the head again before the brain has recovered. But, he adds, once the injury has healed, his experience shows they are at no greater risk than before unless they have an innate predisposition. "I know everyone thinks one plus three equals 10 with this injury," he says. "I don't feel that's necessarily the case."
Among the many advances in recent years, medical researchers are starting to identify which symptoms predict a worse outcome, and they're also devising treatment methods that include physical therapy and medication.
Fogginess, Morneau's chief symptom, ranks high among the indicators of a longer recovery time, along with dizziness and reaction-time problems.
Now that his head is clear, Morneau is protecting it by wearing a helmet during batting practice, albeit one without an earflap. He switches to the earflap-equipped Rawlings S100P batting helmet for games. He still wears a cap in the field.
"I would recommend to everyone to switch to this helmet even if it looks a little goofy," Morneau says. "You don't really want to go through this.

Buck Showalter rips Derek Jeter, Theo Epstein in magazine

today

Perhaps trying to incite a rivalry with division heavyweights Boston and New York, Orioles manager Buck Showalter takes a swipe at Yankees captain Derek Jeter and Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein in an interview with Men's Journal.
Regarding Jeter, whom he once managed, Showalter says:

By Derick E. Hingle, US Presswire
The first time we went to Yankee Stadium, I screamed at Derek Jeter from the dugout. Our young guys are thinking, 'Wow, he's screaming at Derek Jeter' — well, he's always jumping back from balls just off the plate. I know how many calls that team gets — and yes, he (ticks) me off.
Showalter also says this about the Red Sox's signing of outfielder Carl Crawford this offseason to a seven-year, $142 million deal:
I'd like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll. You got Carl Crawford 'cause you paid more than anyone else, and that's what makes you smarter? That's why I like whipping their (butts). It's great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, 'How the hell are they beating us?'
Last season, the Yankees' payroll was $206 million and the Red Sox's was $162 million. The Orioles' was $81 million.
Showalter didn't manage Jeter much during his tenure as Yankees manager from 1992-1995. Jeter was up for 15 games in 1995 before blossoming during his rookie year of 1996 under manager Joe Torre. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired Showalter after the 1995 season.
After Showalter took over for them in early August last season, the Orioles revived an otherwise dismal season with a 34-23 run. The Orioles finished 2010 at 66-96, last place in the American League East. The Yankees (95-67) and Red Sox (89-73) were second and third, respectively, to the Rays (96-66), who had a $71 million payroll last year.
Under Showalter, the Orioles were 3-3 against the Yankees and 3-3 vs. the Red Sox. Only one of those Orioles victories could be classified as a blowout: a 9-1 rout of the Red Sox Sept. 21 at Fenway Park.
The Record of Hackensack, N.J., reports Showalter said he "could've and perhaps should've tempered his remarks" to Men's Journal, but that he also stood by them

Batista believes that Messi could replace compatriot Maradona as the greatest footballer ever...

Mar 24, 2011 4:00:00 PM

Argentina coach Sergio Batista believes that Lionel Messi is on course to become the best footballer in the history of the game.

The 23-year-old Barcelona forward is widely recognised as the best player in the world at the moment and has won the Ballon d'Or award for the past two years. Messi has already won the Champions League twice and the Club World Cup as well as domestic competitions in Spain.

Regular comparison has been made between Messi and his compatriot Diego Maradona, who won the World Cup in 1986 and two Serie A titles with Napoli. The controversial Argentine is regarded by many as the game's best ever player.

Batista believes that Messi could surpass Maradona in stature and has been quoted by Fifa.com as saying: "Messi is on the way to becoming the best footballer in history. "If one looks into the future, Lionel has everything. Maradona was one of the greatest, without a doubt. But Messi right now is the best in the world, and we have to take advantage of that."
Argentina will take on the USA in an international friendly on Saturday and Messi has been included in the squad, which makes US coach Bob Bradley's task difficult.
"Some players are just on the kind of level where you have huge admiration for them above anything else," enthused Bradley. "Messi is one of those. Would I pay to watch him? Without a doubt."

Ferrara is happy with Italy’s performance against Sweden…

Italy Under-21 coach Ciro Ferrara has expressed his delight at watching his team defeat Sweden 3-1 on Thursday evening in a friendly international.
Goals from Diego Fabbrini, Alberto Paloschi and Federico Macheda saw the Italians gather the win. It was the third successive victory for Ferrara, who has also led his team to wins against Turkey and England.
The former Juventus coach is understandably happy with the result and lauds the players for their hard work.
“The boys gave a great performance,” said Ferrara to Rai. “It was not easy but we won deservedly.
“We controlled the ball well and could have even scored more. I have to congratulate my players.”
“Now we must rest and then think about the game against Germany on Tuesday,” he concluded.

Xavi believes the World Champions are the best team in the country's history...

Spain international Xavi believes that the current national side is the best the country has ever produced, as he prepares to collect his 100th cap against the Czech Republic in tomorrow's Euro 2012 qualifier.

"I think so far this is the best Spain team in history and we have achieved recognition around the world," he told Marca.
"People believe in Spanish football now that we are world and European champions, whereas before they never used to as we never won anything."

Speaking on his century, he added: "I am happy for these 100 games and I feel I have the strength for plenty more.

"I am living an extraordinary moment with these players and I am happy to be here with Spain. I want to carry on playing for the national team for a long time.

Italy's Giampaolo Pazzini Begins Derby Della Madonnina Banter With Milan's Antonio Cassano

Inter striker Giampaolo Pazzini has begun bantering with Milan forward Antonio Cassano whilst training for Italy, as they prepare to take on Slovenia in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Saturday evening. The duo may be team-mates for the Azzurri's clash, but will become rivals once they return to the respective clubs, as the Rossoneri and Nerazzurri meet on April 2."I want to keep on doing well for Inter and for Italy," Pazzini told Sky Sport 24. "I am happy with how things are currently going, and I hope Antonio can give me an assist so that I can score."Between us, there has been some banter over the Derby, but we are both focused on defeating Slovenia. Once the match is over, that will be the time to start thinking about the match against Milan."The 26-year-old says all previous results in the league will mean little once the two teams walk onto the pitch."It will be first versus second, so it is logical that the match is important, and everything that has happened prior will be put behind us," concluded the hitman.

Carlos racially abused by fan waving banana in Russia

The incident, which took place in St Petersburg last Monday before a match between Zenit St Petersburg and the Brazilian's new club, Anzhi Makhachkala, is the latest racism scandal to hit Russian football.
The 37-year-old Brazilian and former World Cup winner said he was unfazed by the abuse from an FC Zenit fan but urged the Russian authorities to get serious about tackling racism.
"This kind of behaviour by fans is unacceptable," Carlos told Russian media.
"I am sure my club and FC Zenit will do everything they can to find the culprit. That is the only way to get rid of the problem." FC Zenit, which could be punished for the incident by the Russian Football Association, said it was "deeply sorry" for any offence the unidentified fan had caused. It knew the name of the culprit and had passed it to the police but would not make it public for security reasons, it added.
The club, which is supported by much of Russia's elite including President Dmitry Medvedev, said it would ban the fan from its matches for life. It was fined £36,000 in 2008 after its fans threw bananas and made monkey chants at three black French players, while the club's previous manager, a Dutchman, has said he feared signing black players because of the fans' racist views

Federer changed his decision, he will play Monte Carlo

Roger Federer will return to the Monte Carlo Masters for the first time since 2009, with the Swiss announcing a slight 2011 schedule change on his Faceook page.

"I have just decided to enter Monte Carlo. Hopefully I will see some of you in Monaco in the spring," the Swiss wrote prior to his start at the Indian Wells event which begins the Masters 1000 campaign.
Federer has never won the clay title in the principality at an event dominated for the last six years by king of clay Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard beat his rival for titles in 2006-2008.
Federer's last appearance at the most glamorous stop on the ATP came two years ago, when he lost in the third round against good friend and this week's Indian Wells doubles partner Stan Wawrinka.
That match was played only days after Federer's wedding to Mirka Vavrinec, his longtime girlfriend when the Federer thoughts may have understandably been somewhere else than totally on the tennis court.

Djokovic, Nadal to detour to Bogota for exho

Indian Wells finalists Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will make a quick trip to Colombia, wedging in a one-night exhibition next week between transfers from the Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami.

The pair of multiple Grand Slam winners will being tennis to the South American nation which features just one player - Santiago Giraldo - on the men's Top 100 ranking list.
The event is being hyped to the hilt in Colombia, which rarely gets a chance to see top tennis. The setting will be the capital of Bogota, the date is Monday. The hit-and-giggle for the world No. 1 and 3 will surely be a big-time payday for two of the most bankable current players in the sport.
Nadal and Djokovic are also two of the most in-form current players, with Djokovic looking for a third title from his third 2011 ATP tournament after winning the Australian Open and Dubai. Nadal has yet to lift a trophy this season but is showing his usual impressive form as he bids for a hat-trick of titles at Indian Wells.
Nadal holds a 16-7 lead in the series, with the pair's last meeting a round-robin won by the Spaniard at the London year-end championships.

Nadal, Federer on same side in Miami

Having been overtaken at No. 2 in the world, Roger Federer is seeded third for the upcoming Masters event in Miami. The draw ceremony was held on Monday and Federer is in the same half as Rafael Nadal.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could meet as early as the semifinals at the Sony Ericsson Open, as they were placed on the same side of the draw on Monday afternoon.
Nadal and Federer faced each other a total of just four times in 2009 and 2010 and have not yet gone head-to-head this season, in part because they have almost always been seeded first and second at tournaments. With Novak Djokovic now ranked second in the world, Federer dropped to the third seed in Miami and was thus left at the mercy of the draw.
Aside from that, however, the Swiss has a favorable draw. He is on the opposite half from Djokovic and his three nearest seeds--Mikhail Youzhny, Marcos Baghdatis, and Juan Monaco--are not playing good tennis. Federer is on a collision course with defending champion Andy Roddick for the quarterfinals.
If the seeds hold to form all the way to the quarters, matchups would be as follows: Federer vs. Roddick, Nadal vs. Tomas Berdych, Robin Soderling vs. David Ferrer, and Djokovic vs. Andy Murray.
Murray, however, has been nothing more than dismal ever since losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final. The fifth-ranked Scot could meet John Isner in the third round and Fernando Verdasco in round four. Djokovic should not have much trouble in a relatively weak eighth of the draw that includes Viktor Troicki and Sam Querrey.
Milos Raonic, meanwhile, is seeded for the first time in his career. The big-serving Canadian is likely to open with Somdev Devvarman, who made a surprising run to the Indian Wells fourth round before testing Nadal in two competitive sets.

Roger discounts the doubters as Miami begins

Roger Federer has a quiet message for Novak Djokovic after the Serb passed him for the No. 2 ranking with a third title this season at Indian Wells: staying anchored in the uber-elite has always been a slippery slope.

The Swiss. now ranked third, remains unworried by reports of his alleged tennis demise, quietly confident heading to a weekend start at the Miami Masters.

"It depends on who says that," said Federer of some reports which suggest that he is on the way down after ruling the game for years. Instead of worrying, he's waiting for a second-round opponent after a bye, facing either Czech Radek Stepanek or Italy's Fabio Fognini.

"I don't know if it's 5 percent saying it, 95 percent saying it. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter too much to me if someone is saying that or not. I still think I've had a great six months," said the 16-time Grand Slam winner. "I feel like I'm playing really good tennis, and right now Novak is just a bit better than the rest. And that's OK."

Federer knows that it hard to stay at the top, and he's not concerned about standing third, he most interested in fighting to get eventually past Nadal and take back the top ranking spot.

"I never expected myself to dominate for 15 years, it always goes in phases. This is a good one. I think at the top right now, actually everybody is playing well, but then you hear stories being made up. They are also part of our sport. And it's fine, whatever it is, as long as I don't get affected by them. That's what counts."

Hewitt hopes to be back for Paris after foot surgery

Hard-luck Lleyton Hewitt has undergone another operation, this time on his foot. But the 30-year-old Australian is hoping to be scampering around back on court by the French Open at the latest.

Speculation on the Hewitt pullout from this week's Miami Masters was confirmed by the ATP, with the Melbourne's Herald Sun reporting that the surgery had indeed taken place. "My foot has been troubling me for some time and I needed surgery to enable me to compete at my best with the two Grand Slams coming up soon," the paper quoted the two-time Grand Slam champion as saying.

Hewitt has already comeback from surgeries on each hip, but his form in recent seasons has failed to impress.

Since a disappointing first-round loss at the Australian Open, Hewitt has won back-to-back matches on American hardcourts in San Jose and Memphis in February but went out in the opening round of the Indian Wells Masters.
