Having been overtaken at No. 2 in the world, Roger Federer is seeded third for the upcoming Masters event in Miami. The draw ceremony was held on Monday and Federer is in the same half as Rafael Nadal.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could meet as early as the semifinals at the Sony Ericsson Open, as they were placed on the same side of the draw on Monday afternoon.
Nadal and Federer faced each other a total of just four times in 2009 and 2010 and have not yet gone head-to-head this season, in part because they have almost always been seeded first and second at tournaments. With Novak Djokovic now ranked second in the world, Federer dropped to the third seed in Miami and was thus left at the mercy of the draw.
Aside from that, however, the Swiss has a favorable draw. He is on the opposite half from Djokovic and his three nearest seeds--Mikhail Youzhny, Marcos Baghdatis, and Juan Monaco--are not playing good tennis. Federer is on a collision course with defending champion Andy Roddick for the quarterfinals.
If the seeds hold to form all the way to the quarters, matchups would be as follows: Federer vs. Roddick, Nadal vs. Tomas Berdych, Robin Soderling vs. David Ferrer, and Djokovic vs. Andy Murray.
Murray, however, has been nothing more than dismal ever since losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final. The fifth-ranked Scot could meet John Isner in the third round and Fernando Verdasco in round four. Djokovic should not have much trouble in a relatively weak eighth of the draw that includes Viktor Troicki and Sam Querrey.
Milos Raonic, meanwhile, is seeded for the first time in his career. The big-serving Canadian is likely to open with Somdev Devvarman, who made a surprising run to the Indian Wells fourth round before testing Nadal in two competitive sets.
