MJHL’s top side BJSS told to deliver a title this season

G. Kavin Kartik: Chance to prove his worth for recall to the project squad.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) coach S. Prakash has thrown down the gauntlet to his players to win at least one title in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) after failing to do so last season.

The national sports school have bagged 12 titles since 2003 but last year they finished third in Division One behind champions Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt and runners-up Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).

They were also third in the competition for the overall title won by UniKL, who beat BPSS-Thunderbolt in the final.

BJSS have won the most number of titles than any other team in the MJHL since making their debut in 1995. They were double champions five times (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009) and they were Division One winners twice (2003 and 2006).

“We hold the record for winning the double five times but are now struggling to win a title,” said Prakash.

“However, I expect my boys to give their best this time as they are well prepared for the junior league after having played eight tough matches in Division One of MHL (Malaysia Hockey League), which ended last month.

“I want my players to live up to the tag as the best team in the MJHL and win at least a silverware this time.”

Prakash, who has been coaching the BJSS team since 2001, has also retained 11 players from last year’s squad for the MJHL.

They are Mohd Hazrul Faiz Ahmad Sobri, Mohd Fitri Ismail, Mohd Khairul Naim, Mohd Arif Abdul Rahman, Mohd Redzhwan Jaafar, Mohd Shahiram Zali, Faidzul Afiq Mohd, Mohd Asraf Bahari, Dangerous Lee, Mohd Aslam Mohd Hanafiah and G. Kavin Kartik (pic).

Forward Dangerous and defender Kavin have much to prove this season as they have been dropped from the Project 2013 squad for missing training and failing to make an impact for BJSS in the MHL Division One.

“I want both of them to play well and also score goals from penalty corners in the MJHL to stake claims for a recall to the project squad,” said Prakash.

Dangerous was the top scorer for BJSS last year with 12 goals.

BJSS will open their campaign against former champions Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) tomorrow at the Education of Ministry Stadium. “It’s always tough to play the first match in the league. MBPJ have good players in their side and I hope my boys can settle down quickly to collect full points,” said Prakash.

Ten teams will feature in Division One of MJHL. Besides BJSS, BPSS-Thunderbolt, UniKL and MBPJ, the others in the fray are BJSS Juniors, BPSS Juniors, PHK-MSS Kelantan, SMK Anderson, Ipoh City Hall Juniors and MSS Pahang.

Division Two has 14 teams, who are divided into two groups.

Group A comprises MSS Penang, Politeknik KPT (Kedah), SMK Datuk Sheikh Ahmad (Perlis), BPSS-MWHA, Malacca High School, Matri Perlis and SMK Datuk Taha.

In Group B are Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak), Tunku Besar Tampin, PFS-MI Juniors, MSSWP-KLHC, SMK Padang Midin (Terengganu), MSN Johor-PHJ-MSSJ and MSSPS-MSN Perlis.
