Buck Showalter rips Derek Jeter, Theo Epstein in magazine

today

Perhaps trying to incite a rivalry with division heavyweights Boston and New York, Orioles manager Buck Showalter takes a swipe at Yankees captain Derek Jeter and Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein in an interview with Men's Journal.
Regarding Jeter, whom he once managed, Showalter says:

By Derick E. Hingle, US Presswire
The first time we went to Yankee Stadium, I screamed at Derek Jeter from the dugout. Our young guys are thinking, 'Wow, he's screaming at Derek Jeter' — well, he's always jumping back from balls just off the plate. I know how many calls that team gets — and yes, he (ticks) me off.
Showalter also says this about the Red Sox's signing of outfielder Carl Crawford this offseason to a seven-year, $142 million deal:
I'd like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay payroll. You got Carl Crawford 'cause you paid more than anyone else, and that's what makes you smarter? That's why I like whipping their (butts). It's great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, 'How the hell are they beating us?'
Last season, the Yankees' payroll was $206 million and the Red Sox's was $162 million. The Orioles' was $81 million.
Showalter didn't manage Jeter much during his tenure as Yankees manager from 1992-1995. Jeter was up for 15 games in 1995 before blossoming during his rookie year of 1996 under manager Joe Torre. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired Showalter after the 1995 season.
After Showalter took over for them in early August last season, the Orioles revived an otherwise dismal season with a 34-23 run. The Orioles finished 2010 at 66-96, last place in the American League East. The Yankees (95-67) and Red Sox (89-73) were second and third, respectively, to the Rays (96-66), who had a $71 million payroll last year.
Under Showalter, the Orioles were 3-3 against the Yankees and 3-3 vs. the Red Sox. Only one of those Orioles victories could be classified as a blowout: a 9-1 rout of the Red Sox Sept. 21 at Fenway Park.
The Record of Hackensack, N.J., reports Showalter said he "could've and perhaps should've tempered his remarks" to Men's Journal, but that he also stood by them
